2020 BLACK LIVES MATTER ADVOCACY STATEMENT

JUNE 19, 2020

As a community, the Massachusetts Breastfeeding Coalition (MBC) feels compelled to take a stand and speak out during these important and pivotal times. The racial injustices that plague this country have perpetuated a culture that does not support, respect, or value the lives of black and brown people. We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and all others in the fight against racial and social injustices.

It is well documented that racism and racial inequity live in the areas of breastfeeding and maternal health. CDC statistics show that, not only are Black women two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes, but are also significantly less likely to ever breastfeed. We know this is due to a lack of support, access to healthcare, as well as other unacceptable societal factors.

We actively, loudly, and boldly denounce systemic racism towards our fellow BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People Of Color) community. We are committed to doing the work needed to learn, speak up, make change, and support YOU.

What are we doing:

  • We advocate for equal rights for working and/or lactating families.

  • We actively obtain continuing education and engage in training to improve our racial equity lens.

  • We increase access to educational opportunities to our members, and offer free memberships to underrepresented families which includes access to our growing page of resources.

  • We are in collaboration with organizations across Massachusetts and beyond to address these and other racial/social inequities and create plans of action.

Our Commitment:

  • We will establish a subcommittee dedicated to supporting our BIPOC community.

  • We will continue to strive to elevate the voices of black and brown individuals to achieve equity in perinatal health.

  • We will start a donation campaign specifically for use in our BIPOC community efforts to improve access to breastfeeding education.

  • We will allocate 8.46% of those donations each year to provide scholarship opportunities specifically to our BIPOC communities for breastfeeding education, certification, and acquisition of clinical hours to help encourage representation across the lactation spectrum.

Call to Action:

  • Engage with us on social media to let us know how MBC can further support the BLM movement.

  • Join MBC, be a part of the change that needs to happen

  • Support breastfeeding in your home, in your community, and globally.

We see you, we honor you, we stand with you.
